ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE: AN OLD PROBLEM WITH NEW RAMIFICATIONS

CNN - A post-antibiotic era is hardly an "apocalyptic fantasy," the World Health Organization has said. The idea that key antibiotics could be rendered useless against even minor infections "is instead a very real possibility for the 21st century.". But the problem goes back much further. Researchers in France recently looked at historical samples of one salmonella strain dating back as far as 1911. What they found: The genes that make these bacteria resistant to a drug called ampicillin emerged before that antibiotic even went on sale in 1961. The researchers say this is probably due to another antibiotic that was used in low doses to promote growth in farm animals. That antibiotic, penicillin G, which was widely added to livestock feed in the '50s and '60s...>>>

THE NEW DIGITAL PILL IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF LIMITS OF TECHNOLOGY IN HEALTH CARE

Fortune - Last week, the FDA approved a first-of-its-kind medical device to track whether patients are actually taking their medications. The device is a triumph of technology—it may represent an important tool to support team-based care for complex patients—but it forces us to consider a host of new questions about the limits of technology in health care delivery.
The approved device is a tiny chip embedded in Abilify, a medication used to treat schizophrenia. When swallowed, and once it makes contact with a patient’s stomach acid, the chip releases a signal that a patch—which the patient wears—retrieves...>>>

WVU HEART AND VASCULAR INSTITUTE OFFERS NEW TECHNOLOGY

The Dominion Post - The WVU Heart and Vascular Institute offers new technology shown to protect patients from the risk of stroke during minimally invasive heart valve surgery, known as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
TAVR is a relatively new approach to treating aortic stenosis. During the procedure, a team consisting of interventional cardiologists and a cardiac surgeon makes a small incision in the groin area and replaces the valve via a catheter. This approach is especially beneficial to patients who are not deemed to be ideal candidates for open heart surgery. However, the majority of patients undergoing TAVR have severe valvular calcifications and frail plaque materials on the aorta...>>>

USA. UN ALTRO ESSERE UMANO CON IL DNA MODIFICATO DIRETTAMENTE DENTRO IL SUO CORPO

Wired - Tra tre mesi sapremo realmente com’è andato.

STEM CELL THERAPY SHOWS PROMISE FOR RETINAL DEGENERATION

Medscape - Retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells derived from human embryonic stem cells can be safely transplanted into the eyes of patients with retinal degeneration, with early signs of vision gain, according to pioneers in the field. Two teams of researchers reported preliminary findings from phase 1 and phase 2 trials at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) 2017 Annual Meeting. Patients had the dry form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or Stargardt disease and received injections of human embryonic stem-cell (hESC)-derived RPE cells. At a press briefing, the presenting authors were optimistic but cautious as the studies are very early and very small. "We are encouraged by the results thus far," said Eyal Banin, MD, PhD...>>>

HOSPITAL, DON'T WAIT TO ADRESS THESE LITTLE-KNOW IOT SECURITY ISSUES

Healtcare It News - When it comes to securing the Internet of Things in healthcare, there are many issues that are known obstacles. And then there are those that are not as well-understood. Unfortunately, these issues pose security threats and need to be considered by infosec teams.

“Many CIOs and CISOs at healthcare organizations are becoming familiar with cybersecurity issues associated with the IoT. We’ve all seen news about medi-jacks and ransomware,” said Sara Jost, global healthcare lead at cybersecurity firm BlackBerry. “The issue now has to do more with different obstacles that are preventing CIOs and CISOs from actually addressing the problems, so they have these looming fears but are unable to fix them... >>>

HERE'S ONE REASON FLU VACCINES ARE SO LOUSY: THEY'RE GROW IN EGGS

NBC News - Researchers have identified one more important reason flu shots don’t usually work very well — it’s because they are grown in chicken eggs. Flu viruses mutate every year and it turns out the methods used to make flu vaccines cause them to mutate even more, the researchers found.

“How you prepare the vaccine can have profound effects on how humans respond to it,” said Scott Hensley of the University of Pennsylvania, who helped lead the study. It’s one more reason the world needs to develop more modern methods of making flu vaccines, says Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “We need to get away from the antiquated production model, which the egg is,” Fauci said...>>>
